Everybody HATES Greg: Party & Soundtrack

January 27th, 2010

http://i47.tinypic.com/k0giuv.png

So I’m having a little party for my birthday. Thanks to the good people at the Tavern, R.O.B., So Good Entertainment and Justin Springer for opening their doors. Live performances from Amandi Music, City Slickers and Dre Robinson backed by a band. Then the PD of Hot 97 Boston, the Heavy Hitter DJ Chubby Chub, takes over to kill the turn tables. That combined with a bunch of my rapping friends and nothing but fun can be had.

Of course since we are about music, I wanted to give yall a little. The good people at Pollymore music along with Thats Major put together a compilation of the performing artists. Favorite joints from Dre Robinson, Amandi and City Slickers. Download and enjoy!

The Lost DJ Chubby Chub Interview

January 1st, 2010

Here’s the raw footage from my interview with DJ Chubby Chub (@DJ_CHUBBY_CHUB), Program Director of Boston’s new Hot 97. I did this in Fall ‘09. In the wake of my talk with Rakim (which we will post soon), I figured I’d let this one live too. I’m working on getting more for the new year. Hopefully my on-camera game will improve. Cross your fingers.

Anyway, we talked about everything from his international touring (djing with Kelis on the Britney Spears tour) to Boston’s artists. I had my man Joe Politics on the camera, as Chub just kept it all the way 100. We basically went in on everything. The camera work was a little shaky but it was mos def a good conversation.

I had to make up for all that extra R&B earlier. HA!

5 Anniversary of John Legend’s GET LIFTED

December 28th, 2009

I’m b.s.ing on twitter when the homie @Shen78 sent a shout out to John Legend on the 5th birthday of his debut album. Get Lifted was dropped on Legend’s born day so I’m sure its a special time for the god. A former Sony rep, she worked his project and talked about how easy he was to work with. And she was right. He was cool as a fan as the oldheads would say.

That got me to thinking. One of my first interviews was with Legend. I was a fan instantly after hearing a demo version of “Used To Love You” on Kanye West’s I’m Good mix tape. “Wait! An R&B dude who WASN’T singing about the VIP? Yeah I can rock with him.” So in July 2004, we talked in the lobby of his hotel right before he hit the stage for Jamn 94.5’s Summer Jam. Easy to talk to and full of humor, Legend was excited about the album that he was working on for Ye’s G.O.O.D. Music imprint. And he was so grateful for the chance to talk he offered me and my photographer tickets to the show. Class act and worthy of being remembered. So at Shen’s request here is my first sit down with John. Kinda cool to see what his view of the game was then on the eve of his first joint. Hopefully we can build again soon.

Congrats and happy belated birthday, Brother John. Thanks for the music and the tickets! HA!

Review: Before I Self Destruct & Two Turntables & A Microphone

November 16th, 2009

While everyone is excited about 50’s return to the hard core with his new album. (Cant front. The joint is MEAN. You NEED that), I’m excited about the goodies that go with it. Included with Before I Self Destruct are two movies. 50’s directorial debut, Before I Self Destruct, and a documentary about the legendary DJ of RUN DMC, Jam Master Jay.

50 has made crafted a media persona around the fact that he gives a raw uncut opinion about everything. So in the spirit of the movie’s star, I have to say that I fully expected that this movie was going to be the worst. When I saw that the rapper was not just taking on a movie role with Before I Self Destruct but becoming a film auteur by writing, starring and directing I was prepared for whole new level of bad.

But what I got was a surprisingly entertaining effort. Before I Self Destruct tells the story of Clarence (50 Cent), a high school dropout who becomes a ruthless street enforcer. Shot in HD BISD is a hood film to the next level. Like 50’s music there is a certain gallows humor that runs through the film which makes it entertaining. Not necessarily Oscar worthy but definitely a hood favorite in the making.

The second film is one that is a passion project in the truest sense. Boston born Filmmaker Stephon “Phonz” Watford started working with his cousin Jam Master Jay before he left high school. Being friends with his brother and in the music scene in Boston, I used to see him before his treks in and out of town. He used to come back from tour with JMJ with nuff stories to tell and new music. In fact my introduction to Onyx and 50 Cent’s music was through Phonz. He was a part of the legend’s inner circle. It wasnt just a job for Phonz. That was his family. So as you can imagine that the still unsolved murder touched him deeply. And once the pain subsided, he wanted answers.

He took that pain and turned it into the passion that created this film. He was relentless with this. This is a deeply personal documentary that traces the life and death of a Hip Hop legend. Because he worked so closely with Jay he was afforded a level of access to the key players like Rev Run and Russell Simmons that no journalist could ever have. Thats what separates this film from the average doc. The intensely personal approach as he searches for answers has you rooting for him on his quest.

You may get the new 50 for the music but the visuals that go with it make it a truly worthy purchase.
